i am just wondering why my salinity monitor jumps from 51 to 43 when the lights comes on?

It is very susceptible to interference.
Try moving the wire and probe to a different area.

If that doesn't work, your only choice is to take readings when the lights are out... lol...
Unfortunate, but true.

well i have an orp and ph probe in there too,so i seperated them quite bit.Just wondering if my pumps and lighting would make enough of a magetic field to do anything?

Could it be stray voltage from the hagens?

Thats what i thought too...when my lights shut down too,it went up...so i imagine its a combination.might have to rewire my lights too with some sheilded wire....what do you think?

It's something that you could try. However it might be all for nothing since like I said, these salinity monitors are VERY sensitive to interference.

So I guess i should just put my probe away from my pumps....and like you said monitor at night.....just wondering if all that interference has an effect on the calibration?

Did you calibrate it using the calibration solution at 53mS?
As long as you didn't calibrate it over your pumps or near your lights, I guess you're ok...

i had a similar problem with my salinity monitor. i decided that since it was calibrated on my kitchen counter, i take my readings there too. when you put it back in your tank, you will get an idea of how far off it is getting skewed and account for that when reading it. every now and then just test again on the counter to confirm it.
