I'm looking for some ideas on quiet pressure rated pumps for my return on my 500g.I want mild flow thru my sump area[approx, 200g sump] and back thru 2 returns. any help would be appreciated. I'm thinking LITTLE GIANT.

Hi Johnny,
doing some research on the web for my pumps, i found those:

Well...I guess the Iwaki may be real great but price is so high..
I think I will go for MAG18 for myself...

IWAKIS are very good but energy hogs and the MAGS aren't good with pressure. I think I'll have about 16 feet in head total. I guess the SEQUENCE dart might be okay.

Velocity pumps are silent, but the largest pressure rated one only does 800GPH@0'.

Little Giants can be real loud if you get the fan cooled versions
Sequence are silent, but technically they are sorta "medium" rated. They arnt full pressure and they arnt non-pressure rated.

Yes my experience with little giants is NOISY. I had a Lifeguard pump made by Rainbow Plastics and I run that pump for 11 years non stop (except when in the act of moved) and only cleaned it once .. No kidding. It was the best pump I ever used but it was a costly addition to my setup at the time. It was also VERY VERY QUITE. Don't know if they are still making them or if so if they are being made by Rainbow for them.

Johnny...
16ft head total???? I thought your tank was in the basement.. Where's your sump, underground? ;)
A dart can't push water at 16ft head. Neither can a Stingray. You'd have to go with a Hammerhead.

I love my Dart pump. It's quiet, and moves A LOT of water at 6ft head. You hear a slight hum of the motor, that's it.
I can't speak of the Stingray or Hammerhead since I don't have first hand experience. However if the Dart is any indication, then you won't be upset.

what am I thinking!!! I was calculating the vertical length as well DOHH. should be about 5 feet plus elbows. Maybe the DART will be good for me. I just need enought return to keep the water heated and thru the refugium.

I'm pretty sure the DART would suffice in that case...

How does your 50gal sump handle that much flow? I am looking at a return pump upgrade to a Hammerhead. I have 15.25 feet of head pressure and a 50gal sump.

I'm using the DART on a closed loop.
My sump return is a Mag18 with 6ft of head... ~1200gph if I remember correctly.

The Hammerhead is the only pump in the sequence line that will be able to handle that amount of headpressure.
If it turns out to be too much flow, you could always use a valve to divert it elsewhere (ie: refugium) or even dial it back a bit.

you may want to take a look at the Blueline pumps. I have a few of them and I think they are quiet. and they look nice as they are a bright yellow.
