Hi everyone,

I found a site that sells 6 stages RO/DI filter at an Incredible price (130.00$ CAD!) and here's the cartridges it uses:

(1) High Capacity 5-Micron Sedimentary Filter with Housing

(1) High Capacity Coconut Shell Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) with Housing

(1) High Capacity 5-Micron Coconut Carbon Block (CCB) with Housing

(1) High Capacity In line Coconut Shell GAC Post Filter (PC)

(1) High Capacity DI In Line Filter (DI)

As you can see it uses only 5 micron cartridges instead of 1 micron like most manufacturers. I'm just wondering if it has a great impact on the purified water it produces ?

5 micron VS 1 micron

That sounds like an Aquasafe RO/DI unit.

I'm using one on my reef at home and couldn't be happier. I've read that some people have encountered some TDS readings when using the "final filter for taste". However this is not true in my case.

TDS Readings before the filter are 85ppm and after the filter are 0.

I highly suggest these filters to anyone, for the price they can't be beat.

Using one of these filter systems will not only keep your top up water in the high quality range it will pay for itself on bottled water and chemical costs pretty fast. They unit looks very much like my Aquasafe setup.

Here's my slightly modified Aquasafe 100gpd unit.

You can see an Inline TDS meter and the electronic and mechanical solenoids for automated water control. :)

Tangman... just how often should the unit be flushed and for how long should that valve be left open to flush it?

The instructions state that the unit should be flushed once a month in order to extend the life of the filters...

Thanks for the reminder! :)

Thank you everybody for your feedback !
But my initial question was:
What do you think of the 5 micron cartridges VS 1 micron ?

Rob I generally flush my for 15 min after every use ,but then each W/C usually consists of 35 gal to do allthe tanks its an all
day venture .I start making my water the day before and it seems to work not bad ,better after the fish room & the 1000
lt holding tank is set up.
Vince where did you get your solenoids for the RO/DI unit
those are pretty slick?

IMO the 5 micron cartridge will remove less junk then the 1 micron cartage will. The trade of is that the 1 micron cartage will most likely need to be replaced more often due to faster plugging up of the material. I guess it depends on just how pure you want the end product to be.

Dan,

The mechanical solenoid is a Kent unit that I got from here with the floatvalve. The electronic solenoid was ordered from www.mcmaster.com, part # 7877K53. They're 18.12us each.
They're polypropelene solenoids, however they have some copper parts and hence should be placed before the DI filter.

It makes my life easy! All my water needs are automated. I just need to automate water changes and I'll be a happy man. hehehe
