I'm looking for a Needle Wheel & Impeller here in the Ottawa region for a skimmer DIY. Anyone know where I can find one?

You can DIY a needle wheel by cutting a bio-ball in half and mouning it to an impeller. :)

Conan,

Euro-reef makes the needle wheel for the Sedra pumps that come with their skimmers but as far as I know, you can't buy the impeller on it's own unless you return your old/damaged one. I guess they don't want people using their needle wheels for DIY projects. There's a way of making one out of a modified bio-ball on a standard impeller - info is in the DIY section on R.C.

with the bio ball technique:
lets say I use a rio, do you still have to have the air intake tube? I remeber it making tons of noise!
Thanks guys!

As Marty mentioned, an OEM needle wheel is very hard to come by. They're aware of people wanting them and I've been told you have to send in your broken one in order to get a replacement and even then, they will only do this once!!! Kinda overkill if ya ask me and I understand them not wanting their product to be used for other DIY stuff, but they've decided to be like this.

If you are going to use a RIO then you can get the turbofloter needle wheel for ~$8 US at various mail order places.

Bvoss,
I went on that site but how do you know the gph on those?

I was thinking of getting a Mag 7 or 9 and adding the cut up bio ball on the empeller. Any ideas?

I've contacted Reef Solutions and they say they can send me a needle wheel injector they use for 80$, the one they use on the Reef-626H Skimmer....
Should I go with the modified mag 9 with the bioball or this one made by pros??

For $80 I'd hope that the pump comes with it as well. How big is the pump in GPH?

Go on Reef central. I have seen detailed pictures of the bio ball needle wheel. I woukld think that it would work just as well as the bought needle wheel. Save your money use a bio ball.

this is the email exchange we had:

By me: "Bonjour,
Serait-il possible d'acheter seulement la Needle Wheel pompe pour votre Reef-626H Skimmer?
Merci"

Reef Solutions: "oui c'est possible j'ai un model qui arrive la semaine prochaine pour environ 80$

merci"

I'll ask them....

I have read that thread, thanks to Marty, but was wondering if the 80$ professionnally made would be a better option. In any case, you answered my question. Thanks!
